Back On Track
Monkwearmouth Station Museum has recently undergone a £1 million redevelopment.
A lot of specialist repair work was required on the building including a new roof and stonework repairs. The Museum now offers a modernized, accessible environment for visitors, with new heating and lighting systems and a lift to reach the upper floor.
Visit this splendid Victorian Station to experience a sense of rail travel in times past. You can explore the ticket office - as it would have looked in Victorian times - and find out what it was like to work at the station in the past. Stand on the platform where evacuees from Sunderland started their journey to the country in World War II. Discover a guard's van and goods wagon in the railway sidings and watch today's trains zoom past on the platform gallery.
The Museum houses seven new interactive galleries, including a specially designed Children's Gallery, which provides young visitors and their carers with a stimulating and exciting environment where they can have fun and learn together.
